How to Organize your Travel Pictures

So you've applied the photography tips you've learned online, took a lot of pictures while on vacation using the principles of looking good, now what?

It's time to organize your photographs. Here are some tips and tricks.

Do it as soon after the trip as possible. I know you have a myriad of things to do upon getting back but believe me, organizing your photographs is one chore that you don't want to postpone. Otherwise, you might not have the time to do it at all or worse, your memory might fail you. It's best done when everything is fresh from your mind. Also, the longer you keep those prints unfiled will expose them to fingerprints, etc.

Digital vs traditional. There are two ways of organizing your travel pictures, printing them and storing them in a photo album or uploading them to a photo site. Personally, I use both.

  • Photo sharing sites. The advantage of digital storage is the ability to share your pictures to friends, family and even the world. It's less costly too. I upload my pictures to Flickr. Other options are Webshots, Slide, Smilebox, Multiply, etc.
  • Photo albums. My photo albums are specific for the destination. I don't mix pictures taken in Singapore with those from Hong Kong or Malaysia, for example. When available, I buy a photo album emblazoned with the destination, like I did for Hong Kong Disneyland.
In sequence. Whether you store them traditionally or digitally, arrange your pictures as they happened so as not to muddle your memory.

Travel guides, brochures, tickets, etc. One of the reasons I like organizing photographs the traditional way is because I can also put in paper souvenirs of the trip. I cut out travel guides/brochures and put them next to the photographs. I also attach tickets, boarding passes and print outs of e-tickets and hotel reservations. I think it is a good way of looking back some years later to see how much everything was.

Include everything. Sometimes, in order to save, we print just the pictures with us on it. We skip pictures of the view and our travelling companions too. They were part of the experience and should be part of the memory too. This is another advantage of digital storage. It's less costly to keep all pictures.

Back up. Remember to save. Store it in your hard drive or CD.
