Guess What Came to Dinner Last Night?
These beauties from Zamboanga!
A patient from Zamboanga gave me an ice box full of these crabs and about 2 kilos of shrimps. With the package came several pouches of special sauce.
Dinner last night was special because I love crabs, I haven't had this kind ever and because it came from a patient.
The crabs were unlike any other I've had in the past. They were harder to open. The shell was a lot more difficult to crack. The crabs were fat and filled with meat which was soft, juicy and sweet. The sauce that came with the crabs was coconut based and tasted very well.
Gifts from patients always warm my heart. To this day, I still remember my first "PF". It was a can of Coke and siopao from a patient I was seeing in the charity department of the hospital. That was in 1993. When I receive food gifts from patients, any diet is immediately forgotten. I make sure I eat what they give me.
Dinner last night was heavenly. Not only is my stomach fuller but my heart is brimming too.

these are called spanner crabs in australia. my mum cooks it in coconut milk with pumpkin and sitaw. sarap.
Awww... It's nice to know when our efforts touch other people's lives talaga. What's nicer is when they appreciate it. What's nicest is when they appreciate it and they're from Zamboanga with access to those beautiful, juicy, red suckers!=) What an amazing seafood feast!=)
Maybahay and Ruy, really good seafood. Had the shrimps tonight. Masarap din.
And somehow, as long as you know it comes from the heart, anything tastes good even if it doesn't.
that is so true, em dy... receiving gifts from our patients does warm the heart more than the tummy no!
i remember my hubby telling me about a big supot of balot that the parents of his patient gave him when he was still an intern. (a long time ago!) this was to show their appreciation for ambubagging their 6 month old baby day for hours every duty...
ang sarap ng feeling diba... tanggal pagod kapag from duty... ;-)
What a coincidence! My father in law just brought me a bunch of these too! They are called curacha in Zamboanga and I posted about the first time I recieved these beauties from him :) Aren't they so super yummy? :) I'm having some tomorrow night! You have got some sweet patients there :)
Gita, that's right. Ang sarap nga ng feeling. Makes up for the othr disappointments, katoxican, etc.
ChichaJo, super yummy taaga. Best crabs I've tasted.
what a coincidence! a barkada gifted us with 10 pcs of crabs just 3 nights ago from roxas city! unfortunately, i'm allergic to crabs, and shrimps and lobsters, etc. (an I cursed or what?!). the family had a feast. I ate adobo instead.
Monaco, kawawa ka naman. You're missing a lot.But allergies can be deadly so stay away from shellfish. Matutuwa ang family mo with your decision to avoid shellfish at all costs. They must love you a lot and you're one person less to share the shellfish with. He he.
yup nothing beats the smile and the gifts we get from patients who appreciate what we are doing for them...
Docchef, pati puso tumataba di ba? It's always a feel goo situation.
If I eat crabs, I have to have plenty of coke. Pangontra sa allergy! I dunno why. Paki explain doc...But if the crabs are fresh, no allergies! I only eat crustaceans kung saan ito hinuli to ensure they are really fresh. No-no for frozen ones because for sue, they will give me allergies!
Takam! takam! Ginutom tuloy ako...
Inkblots, coke as anti-allergy. Ngayon ko lang narinig yan.
At least, your case is not as bad as Monaco's.
Well, it works for me. Hehe. Perhaps, there is a placebo effect on me. When I was a kid, we feed the poisoned dogs with sugar, and after that, they feel better. That went deeply in my mind. Maybe I thought, the "poison" or the toxins that come with shrimps and other crustaceans would also be fought by "sugar". Instead of taking sugar, I drink coke instead. It is much enjoyable that way. It has to be a regular coke. Diet coke does not work.
But really, it reduces the itch and the rashes.
Crabs are my favorite food from the sea!!! Yum....from the photo I can say how really 'fat' they are...too bad there is no sea near where I am now and the ones I can buy, the manong from the pinoy store said you cannot be really sure kung may laman.
Thanks for sharing! Namiss ko tuloy...=)
g_mirage, so you're in Austria. No good crabs in the Filipino store? That's too bad. But then again, you have something to look forward to when you come home.
Yeap, Ive been looking around food blogs writing down places to go to and foods to eat in preparation for vacation hihi. I'll be checking your blog often... ;-)
