On Cakes

I am not a cake person but I have friends who are. We were medical students when my friend Inday introduced me to Goldilock's Rainbow Cake. She was a fan after all. The introduction however did not make me one. Frenchy, on the other hand, ordered chocolate cake from Bigby's when we were in Cebu. That I became a fan of. Zara's Clarence brought some for me when he traveled to the queen city of the south.

This cake reflection was triggered by yesterday's event. As a relative was celebrating a huge milestone, of course there was cake. Fondant even. It was really beautiful but the icing and the cake both did not impress. Cousin Tin shared the same observation about the icing.

What about you? Do you like cake? How do you like it?

Hmmm.... I'd say cake is one of the most perfect incarnations of dessert :) I love making cake, I love eating GOOD cake. Bad (tasteless or dry cake, greasy or overly sweet frosting) cakes are the worst. I'm not averse to fondant but I know a handful of pastry chefs who think it is vile.

I love most cakes but chocolate cake is always welcome. Decorations I can take or leave but homemade cake never fails to warm the heart. Ube cake (such as the one in rainbow cake), er... I'll pass :)

i'd rather eat cake than ulam or rice or fruit or anything else. but usually i end up eating cake first then all the rest after.

I'm no cake person myself but I cannot resist Purple Oven's rhum cake. Simply delicious! Haven't had one in quite a a while (are they still in operation?). They used to supply Starbucks.

Manggy, homemade cakes warm the heart even if they don't look at all like they're store bought or as good as yours.

Ness, I prefer the main course over dessert anytime.

Mon, I've been hearing about Purple Oven but can't remember if I've tried it.

Tita Des, I'm not really a fan of caramel. That's why Estrel's doesn't appeal to me as much. Brownies Unlimited's caramel cake is alright though.

Being back here in Manila, I was able to sample birthday cakes and wedding cakes that mostly come with royal icing- my favorite! Butter icing is what's standard in most cakes in the US.
