Blog Action Day 2009: From Reel to Real

Movie buff that I am, I have not seen An Inconvenient Truth in its entirety. I never bothered to see it when it played in cinemas. I tried to watch it when I chanced upon it on HBO but soon became bored.

Contrary to that is my perception of The Day After Tomorrow, a movie about global warming. I love that movie and wouldn't mind seeing it over and over again. I especially like the special effects and how they make the landmarks appear consumed by the extreme weather conditions.

I'm sure many moviegoers felt the same way I did. We considered ourselves far removed from the situation and global warming a thing of the future. While aware of global warming, we lived our lives as if the effects of global warming only happen in the movies.

However, recent events have shown that we are, in fact, vulnerable. We see towns covered by flood waters because of unprecedented rainfall. Because of this, many are left homeless, diseased or worse, dead. And images of death and destruction, while acceptable in the movies, are difficult to comprehend.

The truth is out there. It may be inconvenient but we should embrace it.

We should realize that global warming is not something that can happen; it is happening. The time to act is now. Unlike in the movies, in real life there are no second takes.

To start, let's learn more about climate change. Let's all see An Inconvenient Truth and similar pieces on global warming.
